The screenless fitness band market just got a serious new entrant. Garmin announced the CIRQA Smart Band on July 21 — its first device with no display — and the headline that's grabbing attention isn't the sensor or the design. It's the price model.
No subscription required.
In a category increasingly defined by recurring monthly fees, that's a meaningful statement.
What the CIRQA actually is
The CIRQA Smart Band is Garmin's first screen-free band that tracks fitness and wellness without asking you to pay a subscription. There's no watch face, no notifications, no glanceable metrics on your wrist. Everything gets piped into the Garmin Connect app on your phone.
Pricier than the beginner-friendly Fitbit Air but more affordable than the pro-level Whoop 5.0, the Cirqa aims to offer the best of both in a lightweight, discreet package. It costs $199 and goes on sale July 24.
What it tracks
The health monitoring stack is comprehensive. Onboard health tools include 24/7 heart rate tracking, SpO2 readings, body temperature monitoring, and women's health tracking. Sleep tracking gives you a detailed breakdown of sleep stages, a sleep score, heart rate variability, respiration, and nap detection.
On the fitness side, you can track more than 80 activities — from running to walking to yoga — and select a favorite to start with a tap of the single side button. The band can also auto-detect activities and improve its classification accuracy over time as you confirm or correct what it logged.
For outdoor workouts, there's connected GPS — it borrows location data from your phone to track routes and distance accurately.
Battery life is rated at up to 10 days. The Fitbit Air manages about one week per charge; Whoop 5.0 stretches to closer to two weeks.
One thing to note: the CIRQA uses Garmin's Elevate Gen 4 sensor — not Gen 5 — and there's no ECG at launch.
The subscription question
This is where the CIRQA makes its clearest argument. Unlike some of its rivals, Garmin has opted for a non-subscription model — an increasingly unusual move even from Garmin itself.
Whoop costs between $199 and $359 per year on top of the hardware. The CIRQA is $199 once, and you get access to Garmin's full tracking ecosystem through the Garmin Connect app at no additional cost.
There is an optional upgrade — Garmin Connect+ at $6.99/month or $69.99/year — but it's not required to use the device. The core experience is fully functional without it.
How it fits into the market
Three screenless bands have launched in the past fourteen months: the Amazfit Helio Strap, then the Fitbit Air, and now Garmin's CIRQA. Polar Loop is also in the market. Every one of them has been described as a Whoop killer. The reality is more nuanced. The Garmin CIRQA is best understood as a complementary device — aimed at people who already own a Garmin watch and want overnight recovery data without sleeping in a Fenix, or as a cheaper entry point into Garmin's ecosystem for someone who wants Body Battery and Training Readiness without buying a watch.
Whoop's real advantage isn't the hardware — it's the app experience and the brand positioning it's built around serious athletes. The CIRQA doesn't challenge that directly. What it does is close off one of Whoop's arguments: that you need to pay ongoing fees to get serious health tracking.
The design
The band is fabric — soft, comfortable for all-day and all-night wear. It comes in seven colors: Citron Gray, Mauve, French Gray, Dark Olive, Captain Blue, French Blue, and Black. It can be worn on the wrist or as an arm band depending on activity or sleeping preference.
There's a single button on the side. That's the entire interface. Everything else happens on your phone.
Worth buying?
If you're already in the Garmin ecosystem and want a lightweight band for sleep and recovery data without taking your Fenix or Forerunner to bed, the CIRQA makes sense. The no-subscription angle is genuinely valuable — over two years, the math against Whoop is significant.
If you're new to Garmin and just want a simple fitness tracker, the Fitbit Air at $99 is half the price and does the basics well. The CIRQA earns its premium with deeper training metrics, Body Battery, and the full Garmin Connect data ecosystem behind it.
